The Boys Are Back in Town

June 6, 2012 by E. Casa de Calvo

Manistee, MI ~ This town will be forever associated with my husband’s friends, and the good times we had visiting them. We don’t make it up there nearly as often as we’d like, but whenever we do we have the red carpet rolled out for us. I have so many great memories of good people, good times, and a lot of drink. The quiet times were also enjoyable; we had many peaceful strolls along the beach and even swam a […]

Garza Hotel and Theater

May 22, 2012 by E. Casa de Calvo

Post, TX ~ Post is a small town about 45 minutes away from Lubbock, TX. This was often a stopping point on our way out of town. There is a really good (in a bad way) burger stand on the north side of town. They served all of the goodies I remember buying at the snack bar in high school – burritos, cheese fries, ice cream, and, of course, a texas size greasy cheeseburger. These pictures were taken on a […]

Texas Tech University

May 20, 2012 by E. Casa de Calvo

Lubbock, TX ~ One of Lubbock’s trademarks is its flat land. Whenever it rains, flash flooding is a problem due to poor drainage (again, a product of extremely flat land). If you were unfortunate enough to be caught walking during a shower, expect to get soaked, even with an umbrella. After a few minutes it will feel like you are walking through inches of water. Better yet, it was always a sad sight to see people on the sidewalk get […]

West Texas

May 10, 2012 by E. Casa de Calvo

Levelland, TX ~ Levelland is about forty minutes away from Lubbock, TX. This is a nice drive if you want to get out of town for a while (assuming you live in Lubbock). Plenty of fields and sky to admire on the way, and a beautiful park and town square to enjoy when you arrive. We even drove out here once just to do laundry.

Ghost Town

May 7, 2012 by E. Casa de Calvo

Fluvanna, TX ~ We like to take detours on road trips, just to explore. However, this detour was short lived. We felt uneasy immediately upon entering the town. I’m sure this is due to watching too many “The Hills Have Eyes” flicks. Fluvanna is about an hour and a half away from Lubbock, TX. It seems this area was deserted around the 1940’s after railways were taken over by highways. As far as I can tell, it is still a ghost town.

Downtown Boise

May 3, 2012 by E. Casa de Calvo

Boise, ID ~ While I lived in Boise, the state capitol building seemed to be under constant construction. It may have since been fully renovated, but somehow I doubt it. Another impressive aspect was the town’s cleanliness (no sarcasm implied; it was unusually clean). I have yet to visit a comparable city, except perhaps for Des Moines, IA. Finally, if you are ever in the neighborhood, you must visit the Egyptian Theater. It was established in 1927, and has been beautifully maintained. […]

The Man Who Fell to Earth

April 22, 2012 by E. Casa de Calvo

Artesia, NM ~ If you are a David Bowie fan, check out the movie “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” It was filmed in Artesia and surrounding areas, which is one of the reasons we decided to visit. The town isn’t very large, but it has tons of character and many historical elements.

Boerne Lake

April 20, 2012 by E. Casa de Calvo

Boerne, TX ~ Boerne is an amazing town located about thirty minutes north of San Antonio, TX. The town has grown a lot since I was last there, but it still feels cozy and welcoming. I can’t wait to go back. The Bear Moon Bakery is worth the drive!
